On October 8, 2008, the President signed into law legislation extending the Conrad 30 J-1 visa waiver program for foreign medical graduates (FMGs/IMGs) for an additional five (5) years or until 2013. The house approved the extension on September 27, 2008. The senate had approved the same measure on September 26, 2008. Both measures were due to expire to expire October 1, 2008.
For physician J-1 visa holders and their employers, this extension permits continued sponsorships for those J-1 physicians who agree to work in an area designated as a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) for 3 years to receive a waiver of the 2-year foreign residency requirement.
